Addiction Medicine / Pain Management

If you want help for a substance abuse problem but you don’t want to go to a rehab facility or a 12-step program, Dr. Soroya Bacchus can help you in the comfort of her office or your own home. Dr. Bacchus can assist with drug substance detoxification, rehabilitation, treatment, monitoring, testing, counseling, and harm reduction.

Addiction Medicine

Specializing in substance abuse and addiction medicine, Dr. Bacchus provides physician-supervised outpatient detoxification from the following substances:

  • Alcohol
  • Cocaine
  • Club/Designer Drugs
  • Crystal Methamphetamine
  • Heroin
  • Inhalants
  • LSD or Hallucinogens
  • Marijuana
  • Methadone
  • Muscle Relaxants
  • Nicotine
  • Opiates
  • PCP
  • Sleeping Pills
  • Stimulants
  • Tranquilizers

Using pharmacological treatment, Dr. Bacchus will supervise the withdrawal stages from alcohol or drugs and ensure you have the appropriate medical and family support to manage your withdrawal outside of her office.

Pain Management

Dr. Bacchus also specializes in treating patients who suffer from chronic pain. One of the most common drug addictions is among those who take prescription pain killers such as Vicodin® (hydrocodone), Percocet® (oxycodone), and Oxycontin®.

This type of dependency is a vicious cycle, as patients take these narcotics to relieve their pain, when they actually contribute to the pain instead. Dr. Bacchus can help you overcome your addiction to pain pills and manage your pain without drugs that lead to chemical dependency.

Underlying Issues and Psychotherapy

The goal of psychiatric treatment is to reduce addiction symptoms, including cravings and rebound mood or anxiety disorders, and to prevent relapse. Drugs and treatments used at this phase are not addictive and allow transition to a complete drug-free lifestyle.

After successful detoxification, Dr. Bacchus will continue treating you pharmacologically, if necessary, as well as with behavioral therapy. During counseling sessions, she can identify and treat underlying psychiatric issues that may be contributing to your chronic pain and addiction cycle, such as bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, attention deficit disorder, social phobia, depression, and insomnia.

Dr. Bacchus will develop a highly individualized psychotherapy program to address your underlying mental and emotional problems, as well as the stresses that trigger your addictive behaviors.

Buprenorphine / Naloxone Therapy

Dr. Bacchus is certified to treat opioid drug addictions with buprenorphine/naloxone medication (Suboxone®). There are three phases of buprenorphine therapy: induction, stabilization, and maintenance.

During the induction phase, Dr. Bacchus will administer buprenorphine/naloxone therapy and monitor you with frequent visits in her office.

Once you have discontinued using drugs and no longer have cravings or side effects, you are in the stabilization phase. At this time the doctor will decrease your buprenorphine/naloxone dosage.

Once you are doing well on a steady dose of buprenorphine/naloxone, you are in the maintenance phase. The length of time you will continue taking buprenorphine/naloxone is individualized according to your needs.

Detox and Relapse Prevention

Dr. Bacchus may use FDA-approved drugs during your detoxification to help prevent relapse:

Alcohol Dependence

  • Naltrexone (Vivitrol®): 30-day injectable and oral
  • Disulfiram
  • Acamprosate

Opiate Dependence

  • Buprenorphine/naloxone (Suboxone®): film, patches
  • Naltrexone (Vivitrol®): 30-day injectable and oral

Nicotine Dependence

  • Bupropion
  • Varenicline
  • Nicotine replacement, gum, patches, nasal spray

We also perform both routine and random drug testing to ensure patient safety and reinforce positive patient performance and outcome.
